Susan Wathen brings something increasingly difficult to find in the insurance industry: 38 years of experience, genuine personal commitment, and an understanding that insurance is about protecting people, not simply selling policies.

As the second-generation owner of Countryside Insurance Agency, Susan has been involved in the family business since childhood. Her father, Charles C. Wathen, founded the agency in Lanesville, Indiana, in 1976. Susan earned her insurance license at just 18 years old and became the agency’s owner in 1997.

Her path to ownership wasn’t a traditional family succession. Susan purchased the agency and spent the next 20 years paying for it, continuing the legacy her father began while building one of her own.

With 38 years in the insurance industry and more than 26 years representing Erie Insurance, Susan has developed extensive knowledge of personal and commercial insurance, underwriting, claims, and the importance of helping clients understand their coverage.

Under her leadership, Countryside has remained locally owned and fiercely independent, representing more than 30 insurance carriers and providing clients with experienced guidance and personalized service.

In 2026, Countryside celebrates its 50th anniversary, along with six consecutive years of recognition as Floyd County’s Best Insurance Agency and Susan as Best Insurance Agent, from 2021 through 2026.

Susan is passionate about preserving the personal relationships that have always distinguished independent insurance agencies, even as technology continues to transform the industry. She believes technology should improve client service, not replace the experienced professionals clients depend upon.

Her involvement extends beyond the agency through community service, local organizations, and her role as Lanesville Heritage Weekend Pageant Director. She also participates in national independent insurance agency organizations, has appeared on industry podcasts, and enjoys supporting and learning from fellow agency owners.

Outside the office, Susan enjoys time with her husband and family, gardening, nature, and the Southern Indiana community she has called home throughout her life.

After nearly four decades in the insurance industry, Susan knows that trust is earned through actions, not advertising.
