Second Generation Agency – Celebrating 50 Years

Countryside Insurance Agency, Inc. was founded in 1976 by Charles C. Wathen in Lanesville, Indiana. In 1977, the agency relocated to New Albany, where it has proudly served Southern Indiana families and businesses for the past 49 years.

Charles’s daughter, Susan Wathen, grew up in the insurance business, helping around the office from childhood and earning her insurance license in 1988 at just 18 years old.

Following her father’s passing, Susan fought for the opportunity to purchase the agency she had spent years helping build. She became the owner in 1997 and spent the next 20 years paying for that investment.

Today, under Susan’s leadership, Countryside remains a locally owned, second-generation independent insurance agency representing more than 30 insurance carriers.

As Countryside celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, the agency continues the tradition of personalized service, trusted relationships, and commitment to the community that Charles established five decades ago.

When Charles started Countryside Insurance Agency, Inc., he founded it on three core principles that have now become a tradition in our agency. As such, we are always working to uphold them by working to understand each and every one of our clients as an individual and by always being available when you need us. Outside of the office, we love to connect with our community, seeing everyone at church, ball games, and local restaurants. Our relationship with our clients is at the core of what we do, as it has been since 1976.
